First-Years, Defense Shine In Win Over Centenary

GEORGETOWN, Texas — First-years Ellie Ward and Jada Hollie led the Southwestern women's basketball team to a 58-49 victory over the Centenary Ladies in the regular season's penultimate game. 

Point guard Ellie Ward and forward Jada Hollie were two of three PIrates to score in double figures, combining for 30 points in the win. The pair set the tone early, scoring a combined nine points on 4-for-6 shooting as part of Southwestern's 22-13 first quarter that proved to be the difference in the game. '

Centenary cut into the deficit with a big second quarter from Dymon Drumgo, who scored eight points on 4-for-5 shooting off the bench to help the Ladies outscore the Pirates 15-14 in the quarter. Drumgo continued her stellar play to open the second half, scoring six more points in the third quarter to bring the Ladies within five at 47-42, heading into the fourth quarter. 

Southwestern locked in defensively in the fourth quarter, limiting Centenary to just 3-for-14 shooting while forcing four turnovers. Ward made several clutch plays, hitting a pair of baskets with a free throw and two steals to lead the Pirates down the stretch. 

Ward finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and contributed three assists, two steals, and a block. 

Hollie scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Taylor Carney scored 11 points to reach double figures in five out of the last six games. She also added four rebounds and two steals. For February, Carney averages 10.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, shooting 50 percent from the field, including 37.5 percent from behind the 3-point line on almost three attempts per game. 

Reece Sandercock anchored the defense in the middle with nine rebounds and four blocks. It's the sixth time Sandercock has totaled four or more blocks this season. She currently leads the SCAC with 2.6 blocks per game. 

Addy Tremie led Centenary with 15 points and four rebounds. Drumgo finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Jennae Mayberry added 12 points and five rebounds. 

Southwestern improves to 10-13 with a 6-9 conference record. The Pirates will close their regular season at home against Austin College tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. The team will honor its seniors with a ceremony before the game.
