PIRATES REMAIN WINLESS IN CONFERENCE PLAY

Southwestern University lost its seventh conference game Friday night to #5 Oglethorpe, 63-47. The Pirates remained in striking distance for most of the second half, but turnovers proved costly and allowed the Stormy Petrels to pull away.

The Pirates jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first half and remained ahead for most of the period until Oglethorpe finally tied the game at 19 with just under 8 minutes left. The teams traded baskets and the lead for the rest of the half and Southwestern found themselves down by just 1, 27-28, heading into halftime.

The Stormy Petrels came out of halftime and scored the first bucket of the second half and would never relinquish the lead. The Pirates pulled within 5 points, 41-46, on a layup by sophomore guard Jennifer Tindle with 7:50 remaining, but Oglethorpe quickly responded and went on a 15-0 run over the next 4 minutes. After the dust had settled, SU found themselves down by 20 with 3:30 left to go.

Southwestern was led by senior forward Natasha Azizi who had 15 points on the night. No other Pirate recorded double digit points.

The loss moves the Pirates to 4-13 on the year and 0-7 in conference play. They continue their homestand against Sewanee on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
