PIRATES WIN BIG IN TENNESSEE

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Pirates returned to their winning ways in dominating fashion with a 90-54 victory over the Sewanee Tigers on Saturday night. Southwestern improves to 12-4 on the year and 4-3 in the SCAC while Sewanee remains winless in the conference at 0-7 and sit at 2-12 overall.

Sewanee was able to hang around through the first half of the period until the Pirates began to pull away. Southwestern had a slight advantage, 23-25, with 10:38 remining in the first half. Katelyn Bartell's jumper with 9:39 on the clock started a 15-2 run giving SU a 15 point lead, 40-25, with three and half to go. The Pirates carried a 20 point lead, 47-27, with them into the locker rooms.

Following the break Southwestern started the scoring spree up again with a jumper from Bartell and continued to pile on the points as the game progressed. The Pirates were up by 39, their largest lead of the game, with 54 seconds remaining and the Tiger's Middleton made a three with five seconds left to cut the lead to 36 and give Southwestern the 90-54 final.

Chelsea Leeder was unstoppable all night and led all scorers with 24 points, 16 in the first half. She was also the leading rebounder for Southwestern, snagging nine rebounds. Anna Fareed added in 12 points while Shae Seagraves contributed 10 in the win.

As a team the Pirates were hot from the floor, shooting 47.9 from the field and a sensational 52.2% from three point range. Offense was not the only contributing factor as SU's defense held the Tigers to just 29% from the floor and 28.6% frong long range.

Southwestern comes home again this coming weekend against two very talented SCAC teams. The Pirates face a 5-2 Centre squad on Friday night before taking on an undefeated DePauw team on Saturday evening.
