POOR FREE THROW SHOOTING COSTS PIRATES VICTORY ON ROAD

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Pirate women's basketball team shot just 56.3 percent from the free throw line as they fell to Oglethorpe University 77-75 on Friday night. Southwestern falls to 11-4 on the year and 3-3 with the loss while OU improves to 3-3 in conference and 4-10 overall.

The Stormy Petrels were the first to score after the opening tip and maintained an advantage throughout the first half, leading by as many as 14, 34-20, with five minutes to play in the half. Southwestern began to chip away at the lead from the three point line, draining four from long distance, including two by Kristen Heg, to pull within four, 36-32, at halftime.

Following the break Oglethorpe pushed the lead back to nine, 43-34, two minutes in and hovered around a ten point lead through the next ten minutes. Down by ten points, 60-50, and running out of time Southwestern embarked on a 7-0 to come within three points, 60-57, with just over seven minutes remaining.

After trading baskets over the next four minutes the Pirates were able to come within one point, 66-65 with 2:55 to play after a pair of free throws by Katelyn Bartell. Southwestern continued to remain close but weren't able to pull ahead and OU piled on a six point deficit, 75-69, with 31 seconds remaining.

Reilly Robertson hit two three pointers in eight seconds to tie the game for the first time since the opening tip, 75-75 with seven seconds to go. Southwestern fouled on Oglethorpe's desperation heave by Chelsea MacDonald as time expired and handed OU the opportunity they needed to seal the win. MacDonald made two of the three free throws to close out the 77-75 victory.

SU shot 36.3% from the floor, 25.8% from three point range in the loss and were outrebounded by 12 (55-43).

Anna Fareed led all scorers with 21 points while Shae Seagraves added in 16. Chelsea Leeder recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards. Bartell led all rebounders with 12 rebounds.

The Pirates head to Sewanee, TN for another SCAC match-up on Saturday as they face the Sewanee Tigers at 6:00 pm.
