Pirates fall in overtime at Dallas

IRVING, Texas - The Pirates were held way below their season scoring average on Sunday as the lost to the University of Dallas 68-65 in overtime.

It was clear early that this game was going to be a dogfight as each team came out swinging early in the first half.

Big scoring droughts by both teams to close the first half sent Southwestern into the break down four, 28-24. SU was held to six points in the final nine minutes while UD posted 10 points in the same time span.

Southwestern tied the game three minutes into the second half, but Dallas scored on back-to-back possessions to lead by four, 36-32.

A three by McKamie Place brought the Pirates back within one, 49-48, with just over eight minutes to play and after continuing to battle SU finally regained the lead with 5:25 to go on a pair of free throws by Jordan Owens

Dallas seemed to have the game in hand as they led by two, 63-61 with 11 seconds left on the clock, but senior Chelsea Leeder was fouled on a last second shot and, with nerves of steel, sank both free throws to send the game into overtime 63-63.

Each team made one field goal in the extra frame but UD got four free throw attempts and sank three of them while holding off the Pirates to take the win 68-65.

Southwestern was led by Leeders' 21 points while Owens added in 10 points. The Pirates shot just 38.2% from the floor and 26.1% from long range while Dallas shot 37% from the floor and 22.2% from three point range.

SU narrowly won the rebounding battle 48-46, but committed 22 turnovers in the loss.

The Pirates fall to 8-10 on the year and 4-3 in the SCAC. They open the second round of SCAC conference action at home on Friday, facing Colorado College on Friday before a rematch with Dallas on Saturday.
