KERRVILLE, Texas - The Southwestern women's basketball team defeated Schreiner University on Sunday afternoon 69-55 to start the season off 2-0. Senior Shae Seagraves (pictured) led all scorers with 25 points.

The Pirates got off to a slow start, allowing the Mountaineers to hang around through the opening 11 minutes of the game as SU led by just one, 19-18. With tough defense and a balanced offensive attack SU went on a 16-3 run over the next seven minutes to mount a 14 point lead just before halftime.

Schreiner slowly chipped away at the lead and pulled within six, 53-47, with just under eight minutes to play before the Pirates turned on the afterburners and went on another run to go up by 19 points, 69-50, with a minute left in the contest.

Joining Seagraves' 25 points was first-year Chelsea Leeder who scored 11 and senior Staley Mullins with 10. Mullins was the leading rebounder for SU, pulling down six boards while Seagraves had a team high 4 steals and Anna Fareed led with 5 assists.

Southwestern shot 44% from the floor and 46.2% from long range while holding the Mountaineers to 40.4% and 33.3% from beyond the arc on their home court. The Pirates continue to shoot well from the free throw line, going 19-24 for 79.2%.
