PIRATES FALL IN OVERTIME AT COLORADO COLLEGE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Southwestern's women's basketball team lost to Colorado College in overtime 86-79 to drop out of fourth place in the West by half a game. The Pirates drop to 10-13 overall and 6-8 in the SCAC while the Tigers improve to 12-10 overall and 6-7 in the conference.

Southwestern fell behind early in the first half, going down by 12 points, 24-14, halfway through the opening period, but mounted a 22-3 run through eight minutes and went into halftime up by two, 34-32.

The second half took the same tone as the Tigers built a 12 point lead six minutes in, 51-39, but SU cut the lead in half, 53-47, from the free throw line with 9:24 remaining. Colorado retained the lead until a pair of free throws by junior Shae Seagraves gave the Pirates the lead, 68-67 with 41 seconds to play, for the first time since the opening minutes. 

Senior Jessica Herbst made one of her two free throws in the next possession to put Southwestern up two, 69-67, but after a strategic timeout the Tigers to drew up a play that allowed Becky Luetjen to tie the game on a layup and force overtime.

The opening minutes of the extra frame were back and forth but a three-pointer by CC's Wattman-Turner gave the Tigers a six point lead with 52 seconds left on the clock and forced the Pirates to foul. Colorado made three of their four free throws in the closing minute to take the win.

Seagraves led with 21 points and 14 rebounds while Herbst put up a season high 20 points. Sophomore Anna Fareed kicked in 12.  Collier Clegg led for the Tigers with 30 points while Luetjen pulled down a game high 16 rebounds.

The Pirates were out-rebounded 69-43 in the contest but forced 22 turnovers.

SU remains on the road and heads to West leading Austin College on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
