PIRATES UPSET HENDRIX BEHIND DOUBLE-DOUBLES FROM MULLINS, SEAGRAVES

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Juniors Shae Seagraves and Staley Mullins each recorded a double-double as the Pirates upset West leading Hendrix 70-55 in the Robertson Center on Saturday night. Southwestern improves to 10-12 on the year and 6-7 in the SCAC and moves into fourth place with the win while the Warriors fall to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in the conference.

Southwestern’s defense was impressive in the first period as they held a normally high-powered Hendrix offense to just three points in the opening seven minutes. SU kept the Warriors to just 23 first half points, forcing them into tough shots as Hendrix shot 24.1% from the floor and 15.4% from the three-point line.

After forcing another tough jumper and securing the rebound the Pirates seemed poised to head into halftime up by six points, but senior Narisa Trammell inbounded the ball, got it back and drove the center of the court and drained a three from 30 feet out as time ran out to give Southwestern an eight point lead, 31-23, heading into the break.

At the outset of the second half fortunes reversed as SU was held scoreless early and allowed Hendrix to tie the game, 38-38, with 14 minutes remaining. The game stayed tight as leading scorers junior Shae Seagraves and Hendrix’s Christina Byler took over their respective ends until the Pirates hit a hot streak and mounted a 13 point lead over the Warriors, 61-48, with four minutes to play.

With momentum in place the Pirates continued to hold their lead with tough defense, maintaining a double-digit lead, until the Warrior’s Amanda Morris made an uncontested three-pointer from the top of the key to pull Hendrix with nine, 62-53, with two minutes remaining.

Hendrix was forced to foul after a missed jumper and the Pirates hit 6 of 8 from the charity stripe to close out the game and secure the 70-55 upset victory.

Seagraves led with 20 points while Mullins contributed 19 and senior Katie Kern chipped in 12. Mullins pulled down 14 boards to lead the Pirates and Seagraves had 13 rebounds in the win. Byler led in both categories for the Warriors with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

The Pirates head out on a crucial road trip next weekend as they face fifth seed Colorado College on Friday night who is one game behind the Pirates and have yet to play their second game of the weekend. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm.
