SEAGRAVES’ RECORD BREAKING 32 LEADS PIRATES TO 83-71 VICTORY OVER SEWANEE

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Stifling defense and sharp shooting lifted the Pirates to their third conference win of the season, defeating Sewanee 83-71. Southwestern shot 45.3% from the floor and 41.2% from the three point line in an up tempo contest in the Robertson Center on Friday night.

Paced by junior Shae Seagraves’ 15 first half points the Pirates led most of the opening period. After an SU turnover Sewanee gained possession and crafted a plan during a called timeout. After moving the ball around the perimeter, Miller found Gulley one-on-one in the post who then made a quick move to the basket, sinking the layup to score her 18th point of the period and give the Tigers the lead back, 41-40, heading into the break.

Sewanee retained the lead until Southwestern was able to tie the game once again, 48-48, on a lay-up by senior Katie Kern with 16 minutes to play. SU maintained and built their lead up to 14 points, 76-62 with four minutes remaining on a three pointer by senior Jessica Herbst.

The Pirates closed out the game forcing costly Tiger turnovers and handling the constant pressure from Sewanee.

Seagraves led the way with a season high 32 points, a new Pirate women’s basketball single game record, while senior Katie Kern posted her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. First-year Katelyn Bartell chipped in 11 points while senior Narisa Trammell and junior Staley Mullins had 10 a piece. Lauren Gulley led offensively for Sewanee with 21 points.

The win moves Southwestern to 7-8 on the year and 3-3 in the SCAC while the Tigers fall to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in conference action.

Oglethorpe is next on the schedule for the Pirates on Saturday night. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
