PIRATES IGNITE FROM THE FLOOR; DEFEAT MILLSAPS 66-59

JACKSON, Miss. – The Southwestern women’s basketball team hit a hot streak in their first road game of the new year, beating SCAC foe Millsaps 66-59. The Pirates shot 51.1% from the floor and 43.8% beyond the arc to improve to 6-7 on the season and 2-2 in the conference. Millsaps continues to search for their first win as they fall to 0-13 overall and 0-4 in the SCAC.

The Majors came out strong early, mounting a seven point lead, 13-6, five minutes into the game, but SU quickly regrouped and took the lead 17-16 with seven minutes remaining in the period.

Millsaps responded by building the lead back to seven with just under two minutes to play in the half and took a five point lead, 31-26, heading into the break.

After halftime Southwestern jumped to action, taking the lead once again, 34-33, three minutes in on a jumper by first-year Katelyn Bartell.

With the game locked even for the fifth time, 49-49 with six minutes remaining Millsaps briefly went on to build a four point lead, but SU put together an 8-0 run to go up by four and take the lead for the final time.

The Majors pulled within one with 1:39 left to go, but Bartell and senior Katie Kern went 6-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the victory for the Pirates.

Kern led all Southwestern scorers with 17 points in 19 minutes, going 5-8 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line. Bartell and junior Shae Seagraves also chipped in 13 points in the win. Junior Staley Mullins pulled down 10 boards to lead the Pirates.

Southwestern continues their SCAC road trip with a game at Hendrix College on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
