PIRATES FALL IN SCAC OPENER AT #10 TRINITY

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Pirates opened up their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a tough road game at #10 Trinity and despite out-playing the Tigers for the majority of the second half, fell 68-53.

The game was tight throughout most of the first half with Southwestern repeatedly pulling within two points, but Trinity was able to begin to pull away with a 10-1 run and went into halftime with a 12 point lead, 35-23.

Southwestern never led in the contest but pulled as close as six points in the second half, 46-40, with 10 minutes to play on a pair of free throws by junior Staley Mullins. A series of fouls beginning with 2:30 remaining in the game gave Trinity their largest lead of the contest, 17 points, 65-48.

The Pirates’ offense stalled out down the stretch of the game as SU scored just thirteen points in the final 10 minutes while the Tigers piled on 22 points, mostly from the free throw line, in the same span.

Junior Shae Seagraves led with 14 points while Mullins recorded her third double-double of the season with ten points and a game high 12 rebounds. Trinity had three players in double digits with Ali Marzella leading with 17 points.

The Pirates were able to out-rebound the Tigers 46-40, but attempted seven fewer free throws than TU made during the game.

The loss drops Southwestern to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in the SCAC while Trinity remains unbeaten at 5-0 and goes to 1-0 in conference play.

The Pirates return home for a non-conference match-up against the University of Dallas on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Southwestern will honor their student-athlete’s parents during halftime of the contest.
