COLD SHOOTING LEADS TO PIRATE LOSS

COLD SHOOTING LEADS TO PIRATE LOSS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern women's basketball team was unable to overcome a poor shooting night as they dropped their SCAC match-up 55-37 to Austin College on Sunday afternoon. SU shot just 20.8% from the floor in the loss and fall to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

The Pirates continued their stifling defense, forcing the ‘Roos into 12 first half turnovers and trailed by just two points heading into the break despite shooting just 21.4 percent from field.

The difference maker in the first half was from the free throw line, where Southwestern made 7 of 11 while Austin College made their only two attempts for a five point swing.

SU got off to a slow start in the second half, needing over seven minutes to score their first points of the half, allowing Austin College to mount a 15 point lead, 20-35. The streak was snapped when senior Katie Kern knocked down two free throws. A pair of jumpers by juniors Staley Mullins and Shae Seagraves added to a couple of free throws by first-year Katelyn Bartell pulled the Pirates within seven points, 30-37 with seven minutes remaining.

Austin College went on another run to close out the game and take the 55-37 win.

Southwestern ended the night shooting just 20.8% from the floor and were out-rebounded 50-29 on the evening.

Kern was the lone Pirate in double figures, scoring 11 points. AC’s Kayla Redden led all scorers with 13 points.

The Pirates will return to action on the road with SCAC match-ups at Millsaps on January 8th and Hendrix on January 10th.
