Pirates Finish in Second Place in SCAC for Third Straight Season

Pirates Finish in Second Place in SCAC for Third Straight Season

Nov. 10, 2008

Southwestern University split contests this weekend by defeating DePauw on Friday 1-0 and falling at Centre on Sunday 2-1.

Friday, the Pirates may have been dealing with cold, windy weather at DePauw, but they were hot offensively.

Senior Preston Hollis scored on a through ball from sophomore Alex Keller off the right edge of the top of the box. Hollis took one touch and striked the ball low to the far post that hit the post, slammed off and hit the back of the net in the 27 minute of the first half for the lone goal of the game.

Pirates had some chances in the first and second half, but were not able to find their rhythm again after halftime. They did notch 10 shots and 3 corner kicks. The Pirate defenders were sharp and able to defend well to hold off all attacks including 10 shots and 4 corners from the DePauw Tigers.

Sunday brought the Pirates another chilly afternoon at Centre College which got more unforgiving after an early controversial call by the assistant referee. The referee, ultimately, gave the Colonels an early lead in the first 5 minutes....and then a late goal at the 43rd minute in the first half put the Pirates down 2-0 going into halftime. The Pirates did have several several dangerous chances from David Lozano, Preston Hollis and Josh Spencer.

The Pirates pressed the entire second half and had 9 shots but were only able to connect when David Lozano played a ball to Josh Spencer which lead to a one vs one with the keeper. Spencer slotted it to the keeper's left just past the inside of the post to make it 2-1. GK Ryan Tasin played lights out and kept Southwestern in the game by making 7 saves.

This weekend finished the careers of Seniors Kevin O'Neil, Kevin Jordan, Ryan Tasin, Suresh Thomas, Philip Stehling and Winston Pool.

Even with the loss, the Pirates secured a tie for second place at 7-3 in the SCAC and the seniors finsished in second place three times in their career (2006-2008).
