Men's Soccer Moves to 1-1 in Conference Play

Michael Grimm's first-half goal proved to be all the Southwestern University men's soccer team would need as they handily defeated Schreiner University 5-0 at the Mountaineer Soccer Field on Friday evening.

Carr Panetta picked up an assist on Grimm's goal at the 16:12 mark of the opening stanza as the Pirates opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the victory to even their overall record at 3-3-2 and 1-0-0 in the SCAC.

Southwestern head coach Dustin Norman's squad produced a stifling defensive effort to keep the Mountaineers (2-7, 0-1 SCAC) off the scoreboard including a four-save performance out of starting goalie Jack Viles in just over 73:00 of action. Brendan Prather finished the game and collected a save of his own.

The Pirates led just 1-0 at the halftime break, but a plethora of goals in a span of 24:53 would see Southwestern jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Fernando Garduno-Jaramilo's unassisted goal at 50:20 proved to be the insurance effort the Pirates would need. Raghav Sharma tallied a goal of his own less than eight minutes later and was assisted by Grimm to put Southwestern up 3-0.

Peyton Sullivan would later extend the lead to 4-0 off an assist from Winston Hebert at the 73:50 mark just 1:23 before Nathaniel Blake closed out the scoring with an assist from Ian Triplett.

Southwestern led the team statistical categories in shots (17-14), corner kicks (7-5), and saves (5-2) for a total team effort victory on the road.

On Sunday afternoon, the Southwestern University men's soccer team dropped its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match 3-1 on the road against Trinity University.

Southwestern (3-4-2, 1-1-0) fell behind 1-0 thanks to Trinity's Joseph Kuri converting a penalty kick in the 6th minute of the first half.

The Pirates, however, would answer with a penalty kick conversion of their own less than 18 minutes later when Carr Panetta's attempt tickled the netting to draw the match even at 1-1.

The match remained tied for the next 42:24 until Kuri put his Tigers on top for good with his second goal of the match.

Kuri would then put the nail in the coffin just minutes later at the 69:18 mark of the second half with his third goal of the match.

Trinity (4-3-2, 2-0-0) held the advantage of the ball for much of the second half and it is proven by the Tigers owning a 13-2 advantage in shots over the final 45:00.

Jack Viles may have given up three goals, but the senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., still managed to scoop up eight saves on the day for a strong performance in net despite the numerous shots he saw come his way.
