GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University men's soccer team hit the ground running in their season opener, scoring three goals to defeat the McMurry War Hawks on Wednesday evening.

In their first-ever match against McMurry University, the men's soccer team scored a game-high of three goals which the team has not accomplished since the 2019 season against the Centenary Gents.

Almost playing every member of the team, Southwestern showed depth in their first game and set high hopes for the season.

At the start of the game, the War Hawks quickly attacked the Pirates goal, landing the ball just above the box. But soon after, the Pirate offense took control of the ball and held possession of the ball for most of the second half. Choosing to move the ball and take their time setting up the offense, Southwestern attempted three shots to score. With neither McMurry nor Southwestern able to land a shot, the first half ended 0-0.

However, the Pirate's scoreless streak ended as the offense kept making fast breaks past the War Hawk defense, leading Jackson DeHaven to score the first goal of the game off of a pass from Skyler Frey. As a tradition, the team sprinted to the corner of the field, piled in a team huddle, and celebrated as they scored the first goal of the season.

Feeling the momentum from the first goal, Southwestern took more initiative to attack the McMurry defense, leading Carr Panetta to catch a perfectly placed pass from Jackson Gill to score the second goal of the game off of another fast break.

With the game going in Southwestern's favor and with eight minutes left, Southwestern had another opportunity to score. With Rodrigo Suarez Acuna taking a corner kick for the Pirates, one of McMurry's players drew a red card off of the pass, giving Southwestern a penalty kick. Winston Hebert set up to take the shot for the Pirates, and with a swift mid-shot to the left, Herbert scored the third and final goal to solidify the win.

Up next, men's soccer will get ready for a quick turnaround, traveling to San Antonio to play Willamette on Friday, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m., and then Occidental on Sunday, Sept.5 at 3 p.m.
