Baseball Victorious Against Austin College

Baseball Victorious Against Austin College

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern defeated Austin College 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.  The Pirates held defensively and received a fine pitching performance from Max Smith in the win to conclude the series.

Nate Shipp led off the second inning for the Pirates with a home run to left field for the 1-0 lead.

Austin College retaliated in the bottom of the fourth.  Herron doubled down the left field line with two outs.  Then Williams singled to center field with Herron scoring on the play following an error by center fielder Cray Betts to tie the game at 1-1.

Both defenses held each other at bay until the Pirates broke through again in the top of the ninth inning.  Charlie Garrett led off with a single through the left side and later advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Then Shipp singled to center field to bring home Garrett and give the 'Bucs the 2-1 advantage.

Max Smith and the Pirates defense retired the first three batters in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 2-1 victory.  Smith pitched a complete game allowing only one run and struck out seven batters on the day.

The Southwestern offense was led by Nate Shipp who went 2-4, with 2 RBI, and a solo home run.

The Pirates are now 8-19 on the year and 4-7 in conference while Austin College moves to 5-21 overall and are 2-12 in conference.

Baseball continues conference play against Trinity at home on April 6th in a doubleheader that begins at 12:00pm at Rockwell Field in Georgetown, Texas.
