Baseball Kicks Off Series 1-0 Against Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Baseball (16-14, 6-6) started off their series on the right track against the Schreiner University Mountaineers (8-21, 3-8) Friday night. The Pirates went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning but found themselves down 3-5 by the bottom of the fifth. The Pirates then rattled off runs in the bottom of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to steal the first game away from the Mountaineers for a final score of 8-6 in favor of Southwestern.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Maxwell Mims led both squads in RBIs with four on Friday, also collecting three hits and two runs scored. Mims batted 1.000 in the game, including a home run.
  • Alexander Cannata was just behind Mims with three RBIs and two hits. 
  • Ryan Corbett secured the win on the mound for Southwestern. He threw four strikeouts against fifteen batters, only allowing one earned run.

NOTES

  • Andrew Hardin gained his fourth save of the year against the Mountaineers, relieving Corbett in the top of the ninth. 
  • James Vaquero had two hits and two runs scored but kept the Pirates in the game defensively as the catcher. 
  • Jacob Eccles drove in a much-needed run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Pirates a two-run advantage.
