Baseball Kicks off the Week 2-0, Beats UTD and Austin

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Pirates are playing an odd schedule this week in an attempt to make up games lost to Austin College due to weather and a Tuesday matchup versus the University of Texas - Dallas. The Pirates series against Austin was rained out the first time around, and the first of two makeup games was rained out as well on Sunday.

The Pirates finally got to battle the 'Roos on Monday in a contest that went to an unexpected 12 innings but saw Southwestern come away with a 9-8 victory. Seven different Pirates scored two or more hits against the 'Roos, and six Pirates came away with runs batted in. Austin College held a 6-2 lead by the bottom of the fifth inning. However, the Pirates stormed back with a five-run inning in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead.

The 'Roos answered right back with two runs in the top of the sixth to gain an 8-7 advantage. A run from the Pirates tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth. The Pirates did what they have done time and again this year and stole the game away from the 'Roos scoring a run in the bottom of the 12th to seal the game.

The Pirates would scratch out a win yet again against the UTD Comets on the following day, a rare 12:00 PM start on a Tuesday. The Pirates got off to a rocky start giving up four runs in the bottom of the second to the Comets. One frame later, the Pirates answered with four runs of their own to take a 6-4 lead heading into the fifth.

The Comets and the Pirates exchanged runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and the Comets would score another in the bottom of the eighth. Runs in four out of the nine innings, along with the four scored in the fourth, allowed the Pirates to hold on to take the 7-6 victory for the second time this season against the Comets. Preston Witt powered the Pirates to the win with two hits and four RBIs, while the senior shortstop Alex Cannata went for two hits and two RBIs.

The Pirates end their season at Texas Lutheran for their final conference series of the season before the SCAC Conference Tournament. Southwestern will play the Bulldogs in the first game on Friday, April 28th, at 6:00 PM in Seguin, Texas.
