Southwestern Closes Texas Lutheran Series With Win

SEGUIN, Texas — Southwestern baseball bounced back from yesterday's pair of losses against Texas Lutheran with a 6-4 win over the Bulldogs to close the weekend's three-game series.

The Pirates got plenty of production from the first two spots in their lineup, with Ted Lobkowicz and Maxwell Mims hitting a combined 6-for-9 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Southwestern also got solid performances from three pitchers, with J.J. Slack going the final five innings to pick up his second win of the season.

Texas Lutheran struck first, scoring a single run in the bottom of the first. Caleb Maly singled to right field, then advance to second on a passed ball. Cullen Motsinger grounded out to second, moving Maly over to third. Then Maly scored on an Austin Colon ground out for the unearned run off of starter Machi Horne

Southwestern respond with a three-run third inning. Bryce Debbs hit a one-out double down the left-field line, setting up a Lobkowicz RBI-single to right field. Mims followed with a two-run blast to left field for his second home run of the series.

Trey Dees took over for Horne to start the third, walking Austin Colon then moving him over to third on a throwing error. Joe Jimenez drove Colon in on a groundout to Dees to bring the score to 3-2.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Slack took the mound for Southwestern in the fifth, retiring Texas Lutheran in order. The Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on an RBI-single from Maly that advanced runners to second and third on an error, then an unearned run on a Motsinger sacrifice fly for the 4-3 lead.

Mims put the PIrates on top again with an RBI infield single on a 1-2 count. Jakes Harris then hit an RBI-single to single, scoring Lobkowicz. Southwestern added an insurance run on Landon Durdin's RBI-double to left-center, scoring Preston Witt. It wasn't needed, however, as Slack struck out six through the final three innings, including striking out the side in order to close out the eighth.

Slack finished with eight strikeouts while surrendering two runs, one unearned, with three walks in the win. Horne went two innings, giving up two hits with one run, one walk, and one strikeout. Dees went two innings, giving up two hits with one run, two walks, and a strikeout.

Lobkowicz hit 4-for-5 from the leadoff spots, scoring two runs with one RBI. Mims hit 2-for-4 with a walk, driving in three RBIs with a run scored. For the series, Mims hit 5-for-10 with two home runs, driving in six RBIs with four runs scored.

Southwestern moved back over .500 at 15-14 with the win, including a 10-5 conference record. The Pirates will host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday at 6:00, then host Austin College next weekend for a three-game series.
