Villarreal is a four-time state qualifier and earned a bronze medal in the 200 IM at the 4A State Meet in 2014. He has also earned All-American honors in the 200 back (2013 & 2014), 200 IM (2014) and 400 IM (2013 & 2014). Villarreal is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.

Alex is the son of Steve and Kathy and has five siblings; Monica, Marcus, Julia, Michael and Olivia. He is majoring in business at Southwestern.
