Men's Swimming and Diving Finishes Third at Tiger Invite

SAN ANTONIO — Sam Anderson led Southwestern to a third-place finish on the men's side by scoring one gold and two bronze medals. The Pirates trailed Trinity and UT-Permian Basin with a score of 660, recording one first-place and second-place finish and five third-place finishes. 

Anderson led the way with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 1:54.61. He also scored a season-best in the 100-yard breaststroke at 59 seconds, placing third, and a time of 2:08.96 in the 200-yard breaststroke for another third-place finish. 

Zachary Kangieser placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.10) and used a season-best time (4:43.58) in the 500-yard freestyle for a third-place finish. Freshman diver Griffin Salinas set a new school record in the one-meter dive with a score of 304.5, placing third. The quartet of Anderson, Drew Anderson, Henry McClure, and Sebastian Ortiz also placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  

Southwestern swimming & diving All-American Jesse Stovall earned an NCAA B-cut in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.68 to headline the Pirates' participation at the Trinity Tiger Invitational. 

Stovall placed second in the event, finishing just behind Trinity's Emma Hagan's time of 51.41. Her time clocked in ahead of the NCAA Division III B standard of 51.71, putting Stovall on the list of student-athletes in consideration for the NCAA Championships. 

The current A-standard in the 100-yard freestyle is 49.31 seconds. Stovall's personal-best time in the event is 51.38, set at the 2020 SCAC Championships. 

Southwestern ended the event with six second-place finishes and five third-place finishes, finishing with 794 points to place second behind Trinity, who scored 1,323 points. 

Stovall placed second in three of her events, recording a season-best time in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.88, and clocking in at 57.58 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. 

Sophomore Maysen Hauck earned three third-place finishes for Southwestern, recording times of 5:15.59 in the 500-yard freestyle, 2:08.58 in the 200-yard backstroke, and 4:46.08 in the individual medley. Junior Emma Frey recorded season bests in the 50-yard freestyle (24.56), 100-yard backstroke (58.38), and 100-yard backstroke (58.40), earning a second-place finish in the last one. 

The Pirates also posted a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Stovall, Zoe Garcia, Emma Williams, and Frey at a time of 1:36.84 and in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.06. Frey, Natalie Gierat, Stovall, and Williams also placed third in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in 4:02.21, and in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.16. 

Garcia also broke a school record in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:55.82.
