Pirates Come-From-Behind Effort Falls Short to Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - Despite the early lead, the Southwestern University men's soccer team allowed three consecutive Schreiner goals before coming just short on a comeback effort of their own, eventually falling 3-2 to the Mountaineers on Friday afternoon in SCAC play.

The Pirates were the dominant team in the stat sheet, out shooting Schreiner, 16-9, and holding a commanding 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. However, Schreiner as able to cash in on their opportunities to come away with the victory.

Southwestern jumped out in front in the 30th minute as junior Jake Swonke continues his brilliant play at forward, earning his sixth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Kip Karschnik for the 1-0 lead.

Schreiner immediately responded in the 32nd minute on a goal from Antonio Cortes and moments later in the 40th minute, Gregg Gutierrez increased the Mountaineer lead to 2-1 on a penalty kick, taking that very lead into the break.

With the momentum, Schreiner found a third goal as Gutierrez scored his second of the match on an assist from Cortes to increase the lead out to 3-1.

Southwestern turned up the pressure, eventually earning a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, which junior Alex Newell finished to cut the deficit to one. Despite an aggressive attack in the final minutes, the Mountaineers held on for the 3-2 win.

Swonke and Karschnik led the attack for Southwestern with four and three shots, respectively, while Newell and freshman Jaxon Whittington each had two shots in the contest. In goal, senior Ryan Benner had three saves in the contest.

Southwestern moves to 4-7-3 overall and 2-5-3 in SCAC play. They return to action on Sunday as they travel to San Antonio for a matchup against No. 3 Trinity, scheduled for 2 PM.
