CONWAY, Ark. - A silent first half turned into a firestorm as Southwestern took down Rhodes College 2-1 to open the year.
Jake Swonke struck first with a header off of Carlos Huntley-Jimenez's service just minutes into the second half. SU added another as Kip Karschnik found Christian Lopez who buried the ball in the back of the net in the 88th minute.
Rhodes made it interesting with a goal in 89th minute but were unable to get another shot off before time expired.
Ryan Benner earned the win in goal, posting two saves on three shots.
Southwestern (1-0) remains in Conway to face host-institution Hendrix College on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
