Pirates take win 3-2 in overtime

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Philip Nelson's sliding shot in the final seconds of overtime went into the back of the net for the game-winner as Southwestern defeated Austin College 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Austin College took the lead in the 24th minute as SU's defense wasn't able to clear a corner kick out of danger. Jack Wheaton found the ball at his feet and buried it in the back of the net to put the 'Roos on top 1-0.
  • Nick Peterson evened the score line with a confident strike from 20 yards out dead center of goal on a ball not cleared by the 'Roo defense in the 38th minute.
  • A beautiful free kick early in the second half put the Pirates on top. Charlie Berndt took the kick deep in the Pirate defense and found Philip Nelson who misdirected the ball forward quickly to Kirk Kemnitz who got just enough of a touch to slide the ball past AC and into the back of the net.
  • Austin College's Sloan was hit with a second yellow card, resulting in a red and forcing the 'Roos to play a man-down the final 30 minutes.
  • A handball in the box by SU allowed Austin College the opening they needed as Garrett Matacle put it away to tie the game 2-2 with 25 minutes to play.
  • It took extra time for the Pirates to seal the win as David Arellano found Philip Nelson in front of goal for the game winner in the 100th minute.
