KERRVILLE, Texas - With a 2-0 win over Schreiner, Southwestern is just two wins away from tying the record for most wins in a season at Southwestern. The 2001 Pirate team won 14 matches.
Southwestern controlled the game from the opening whistle and were just inches from scoring in the 10th minute when Evan Javors headed Timothy Eamma's corner kick at goal. Javors' header went just wide of the frame, keeping the game scoreless.
Three minutes later Zach Faulkner put the Pirates ahead, assisted by Javors and Eamma, handing the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
After a flurry of substitutions by Schreiner, the Mountaineers put one shot on frame in the 31st minute, looking to even the count before halftime. Daniel Poole remained vigilant in goal and made the save to keep Schreiner scoreless heading into halftime.
Schreiner opened the second half with a more aggressive attitude but were penalized three times including a foul in the box to hand the Pirates a penalty kick in the 59th minute. A seasoned veteran at penalty kicks, Matthew Nickell addressed the ball and put it home for a 2-0 Southwestern lead.
With some breathing room the Pirate defense took over and didn't allow another Mountaineer shot the rest of the match to close out the 2-0 win.
Southwestern led 8-4 in shots and 8-7 in corner kicks for the match. Poole recorded just the one save on one shot on goal while Blake Lawson had one save on three shots on goal.
The Pirates improve to 12-5-1 on the year and 10-1-1 in the SCAC with the win while Schreiner falls to 4-10-3 and 4-6-2. They play their final road conference match of the season on Sunday in Seguin, facing Texas Lutheran University.
