Pirates match best conference start ever with 2-1 win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second time in his career Head Men's Soccer Coach Don Gregory has his Pirates off to a 6-0 SCAC conference start.

Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie gave Colorado College the lead midway through the first half when his header off a cross from senior forward Sean Parham beat goalkeeper Daniel Poole at the left post.

The Tigers nearly scored just three minutes into the game, but Southwestern's Zach Faulkner made a brilliant sliding stop at the goal line after freshman midfielder Caden MacKenzie drew Poole off his line and slid a pass across the crease to a wide-open Ogilvie.

The Pirates tied the game in the 55th minute when Faulkner knocked in the rebound off a shot by Michael Olivares that CC goalkeeper Ian Horne tipped off the crossbar.

The goal was the first allowed by the Tigers in conference play this season, ending a scoreless streak of 4:14.45.

Southwestern took the lead in the 66th minute when Steven Resnick chased down a long pass from Matthew Nickell and launched a shot from just outside the top of the box that found the upper left corner.

The Tigers nearly tied it with 5:34 remaining, but sophomore forward Max Grossenbacher's header off an Ogilvie cross from the right side went inches wide of the left post.

Southwestern trailed 23-9 in shots and took three fewer corners, 6-3. The true difference came in goal where Poole recorded three saves on three shots on goal while his counterpart, Horne, posted no saves.

The win improves SU to 8-4 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in the SCAC. They return to Texas to face the University of Dallas on Sunday at 2 p.m., looking to make history with the programs first-ever 7-0 conference start.
