Allen scores game winner as Pirates defeat HSU

Southwestern trailed at halftime but regrouped for back-to-back goals to kick off the second half to pull out the 3-2 win over Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday.

The Cowboys came out of the gate guns blazing and rattled off numerous shots at Ryan Johnson in goal. Southwestern had some well executed attacks that were ultimately fruitless as the game moved towards halftime. HSU struck first with a goal two minutes before halftime as Dillon Parkhill found the back of the net to send SU into the break down 1-0.

The Pirates broke the game open in the 50th minute as Michael Olivares scored, assisted by Austin Robinson to tie the game immediately followed by Kirk Kemnitz's goal, assisted by Andres Carreno-Mendez, to put Southwestern up 2-1 early in the second half.

Hardin-Simmons responded with another goal in the 63rd minute as Colyn Moore found the back of the net, assisted by Tanner Coffin.

An HSU line change gave the Pirates the match-up they needed as SU went on the attack. After two quick shots just off the mark from Paden Williams, SU got the go-ahead goal form Kyle Allen in the 77th minute to put the Pirates up 3-2. Allen's goal turned out to be the game-winner as the Pirates held the Cowboys to just two shots the rest of the way.

Southwestern trailed in the shot count 11-8 and had just one corner kick while HSU had six opportunities. Starting keeper Ryan Johnson logged three saves in the first half while Daniel Poole recorded on in the second half.

The win moves Southwestern back even on the year at 2-2 while HSU remains winless at 0-3. The Pirates return to the pitch on Tuesday as they face conference-rival Trinity in San Antonio at 7:30 p.m.
