BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Nick Pierce had a season high
12 saves but the Pirates dropped their match Sunday at
Birmingham-Southern 2-1 to fall to 5-6 on the season. The Panthers
improve to 9-2-1 on the season.
Southwestern took the lead in the first half with an unassisted
goal by junior Alex Keller. The Pirates would retain the 1-0 lead
going into halftime due in large part to Pierce’s 10 saves in
the opening period.
BSC scored two goals late in the second half despite being outshot
14-5. In the 63rd minute the Panthers evened the score when Head
found Shelton and then captured the lead in the 80th minute when
Head scored a goal of his own, assisted by Crocker.
The Pirates led in both the shot column and in corner kicks, taking
24 shots to BSC’s 19 and had two more corners (5-3) than the
Panthers.
Southwestern will return home this weekend for two crucial SCAC
matches. The Pirates face fourth place DePauw on Friday and third
place Centre on Sunday. Friday’s game is slated to begin at
2:00 pm in Georgetown, Texas.
