SENIOR SOCCER PLAYERS SWEEP ANCHOR AWARD HONORS

Senior soccer players Eryn Snyder (Spring Branch, TX/Smithson Valley HS) and Kevin O'Neil (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS) have been selected as the 2009 female and male Pirate Anchor award winners.

Snyder, goalkeeper and captain for the 2009 women's soccer team, is majoring in Anthropology at Southwestern.  On campus she is a Mood Scholar and Zeta Tau Alpha, ODK and SU Libertarians member. Erin has also held various offices such as historian, reporter and PR programmer and done volunteer work with Zeta Tau Alpha including Race for the Cure, Paint the Town Pink and the Crown Classic Dodgeball Tournament. Erin has also volunteered through Destination Service where she worked with other SU students to help build a trail in Gila National Park in Gila, NM. She was a volunteer intern for ACCION Texas, a non-profit micro-lender that helps small minority businesses.

Oneil, defenseman and captain for the 2009 men's Pirate soccer team, is a double major in Business and Physics and has been named as the Outstanding Senior of the Year in the Physics Department, Business Department Outstanding Student of the Year, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. On-campus, Kevin is a three-year SU Ambassador for the Admissions Office, three-year member of the Student Foundation, three-year Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity member where he was the chapter president in the Spring of 2008, and served as a resident assistant for one year. He has also been the student homecoming chair, membership chair for Student Foundation, and part of the Business Ethics Team and Financial Analyst Program at SU. Kevin was also a student research assistant for two professors, one at Rice and one at Southwestern, where he researched, reviewed, planned and presented information. He also held a commercial real estate internship in the Summer of 2007.

Other finalists for the 2009 Pirate Anchor Award were Nick Parker (tennis), Ben Sloan (cross country), Jessie Carrier (swimming) and Natasha Azizi (basketball).

The Anchor award is presented annually by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) to the male and female athlete who best display a number of traits that embody the spirit and character of the SU community. The winners are voted on by any members of the Southwestern student body, faculty and staff.
