The SU men's soccer team improved its season record to 2-0-1 on Wednesday (Sept. 5) with a solid 2-0 shutout of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Georgetown, TX.
In the first period, the Pirates opened up the scoring when junior Josh Spencer (Huntsville, TX/Southern Methodist University) scored his first goal of the season on a header with an assist from Brian Kasper (Dallas, TX/Rockwall HS). Later in the half, senior Kyle Strine (Houston, TX/Klein Oak HS) snuck a goal in to the right side of the net, with Scott Smith (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) getting an assist, to put Southwestern ahead 2-0.
Both teams were able to attempt more shots in the second period but neither managed to score a goal. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Tasin (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) recorded the shutout win for SU as he made four saves.
The Pirates out-shot UMHB 15-11 and put nine shots on goal compared to the Crusaders' four. SU also held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Southwestern remains one of five unbeaten teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
SU faces the Hardin-Simmons University at 4:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 7) and then the University of Texas-Dallas on Saturday (Sept. 8) in Dallas, TX.
