Cates announced as SCAC Man of the Year nominee

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Will Cates has been named one of five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Man of the Year nominees, the league office announced on Friday.

Cates, who recently graduated from Southwestern University, was a standout baseball player over the last four seasons for the Pirates.

The Houston native was a two-time All-SCAC and all-region performer, including his junior campaign when he was named SCAC Player of the Year and D3baseball.com honorable-mention All-American. Additionally, Cates was tabbed the Dr. Tex Kassen Male Athlete of the Year for both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.

To be nominated for the SCAC Man of the Year award, student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in his primary sport by the end of the 2016 spring season, received his undergraduate degree and had a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

The 2016 SCAC Man of the Year will be selected later this month.
