Cates named CoSIDA Academic All-American on Wednesday

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern University senior Will Cates earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) second-team Academic All-America honors, the organization announced on Wednesday. It marked the second straight season that Cates collected Academic All-America laurels.

Cates, who was a third-team selection a year ago, graduated in May from Southwestern with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, in which he maintained a 3.741 GPA. This fall, the Houston native will enroll in medical school and pursue a career as a surgeon.

In his final campaign with the Pirates baseball team, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound outfielder led the squad with a .388 batting average, 11 doubles, seven triples, eight home runs and 28 stolen bases. He also drove in 26 runs and scored 45 times out of the leadoff spot in the lineup. Cates was named first-team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for the second straight season and earned a pair of all-region accolades from ABCA/Rawlings (first team) and D3baseball.com (third team).
