Cates tabbed SCAC Hitter of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Southwestern University senior Will Cates was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Hitter of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

Cates, an outfielder from Houston, helped the Pirates to a series victory over Schreiner last weekend at Rockwell Field. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder hit .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles, one triple, a homer and four RBIs. His 16 total bases translated to a 1.143 slugging percentage, while he reached base at a .647 clip. Additionally, Cates stole five bases in as many attempts, scored four runs and was intentionally walked twice.

In the first game of last Saturday's doubleheader against the Mountaineers, Cates was a home run short of the cycle and stole four bases. He then hit a homer to lead off the nightcap, which propelled Southwestern to a win in the series finale.

Cates is hitting .418 (38-for-91) with eight doubles, five triples, one home run and 13 RBIs. The Pirates' leadoff batter is slugging .648 and has stolen 18 bases in 21 attempts.

Cates and the rest of the Southwestern squad will host Texas-Dallas in a non-conference contest on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
