WIN STREAK SNAPPED AT EIGHT BY COMETS

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Pirates’ win streak was snapped at eight games after a 12-9 loss to the Comets of UT-Dallas on Wednesday afternoon at Rockwell Family Baseball Field. The two teams combined for 29 hits as the score was tied through seven, but a three-run eighth by UTD game them the win.

Southwestern applied the pressure early, scoring one run when Nate Shipp singled to centerfield, stole second and reached third on an overthrow on the throw down and Wooten’s slow roller to right field allowed him to cross home.

The Comets of UT-Dallas responded with a pair of runs to take the lead 2-1 after one and a half innings. UTD tacked on one more in the third before Southwestern got back down to business, scoring three runs with well placed hits to take the lead, 4-3, after three.

In the fourth inning UTD loaded up the bases with no outs and proceeded to clear them after a long sacrifice fly to left field by Lorber and a homerun over the scoreboard by Diemer. They went on to score two more in the innings, taking a commanding 9-4 lead.

Not to be outdone, SU loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth, but only managed to score one run, closing the lead to four, 9-5.

After blanking the Comets in the fifth and sixth the Pirates cut the lead completely with a two run double off the right field fence by Boone and then Kyle Belski brought in two more with a triple off the centerfield fence. With four runs scored in the inning SU got right back in the game with the score 9-9 after six innings.

A three run home run by Killgore in the top of the eighth gave UT-Dallas the lead once again, 12-9. Southwestern was unable to recover as they broke their win streak to fall to 11-18 on the season.

Todd Boone led the way for SU going 3-5 from the plate with two RBI’s and two runs. Eric Kegley garnered the loss while Reeder earned the win for UTD and Spinn was credited with the save.

The Pirates return to SCAC conference action this weekend with a crucial two game series at Trinity. Trinity sits atop the SCAC West while the Pirates are just one game out of fourth. Game time is set for 4:00 pm on Friday, April 2nd.
