NINTH INNING RALLY HANDS PIRATES LOSS

NINTH INNING RALLY HANDS PIRATES LOSS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Trinity Tigers used a two run ninth inning rally to take the finale of this weekend’s series over Southwestern today at Rockwell Field.

Trailing by a run the Pirates rallied to score twice in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead. Charlie Garrett got things started with a one-out double to left center. One batter later Nate Shipp drove him in with a single up the middle. John Wooten followed with a single to left, advancing Shipp to third. A wild pitch by Trinity reliever Eric Binder brought Shipp across.

In the ninth Trinity third baseman Kevin Jackson doubled to left to lead off the inning. After an intentional walk to Evan Jones he advanced to third on a fly-out and eventually scored on Nick Pappas’ double to left center. The Tigers took the lead for good when Will Donnan, running for Jones, scored on a groundout by Dominick Robusto.

Early on it looked like this would be another offensive shootout, as the game was tied at five after four innings. However, both teams got stellar efforts from their bullpens. Aaron Garza anchored the game for the Pirates, going five and 1/3 innings of relief, giving up four runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. The Tigers got three and 2/3 innings of shutout relief from Ryan Lucero after the Pirate offense touched Trinity starter Ben Klimesh for five runs in his two and 1/3 innings.

Southwestern got another balanced offensive effort from their lineup as five players had at least two hits. Third baseman Jay Sterling led the way going three for five with an RBI. Kyle Belski was two for four with a run scored. Lance Gottardy was two for four with an RBI and John Wooten was two for five with a run.

The Pirates now sit at 3-16 on the season and 0-8 in the SCAC. Their next game is March 13th at Hendrix, beginning at 1:00 PM.
