EARLY INNINGS LEAD TO PIRATE LOSS TO MILLSAPS

The Millsaps Majors completed a two game weekend sweep over the Southwestern Pirates this afternoon at Rockwell Field by a score of 21-7.

The Majors jumped on the Pirates in the first inning, scoring three times and never looked back. They added three more in the second and six in the third.

Southwestern starter Matt Stuart lasted only two innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on four hits with two walks. Five relievers combined to pitch the final five innings, collectively allowing 14 runs, (11 earned) 14 hits, and nine walks.

The Pirates tried to rally in the middle innings getting as close as 12-7 after scoring four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, but Millsaps exploded for nine runs in the top of the seventh, squashing any hopes of a comeback.

Offensively Millsaps was led by Drew Leonard (3-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Will Hawkins (4-4, 4 runs, 1 RBI).

The Pirates were paced by Kyle Belski (2-4, 2 runs), and Chris Lowry (2-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI). Cray Betts provided the offensive highlight of the day for Southwestern with a three-run home run to right center in the fourth. It was his first of the season.

Offense was clearly the story of this series as the teams combined to score 29 runs on Saturday and 28 runs today.

The loss dropped Southwestern to 3-9 (0-2 SCAC) on the season. They will look to rebound at home against Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday starting at 2:00 PM.
