The Southwestern University baseball received a gutsy performance from senior Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS) as the Pirates defeated DePauw University 3-2 in game one of a three-game series at the SCAC Divisional Playoffs being held in Millington, TN.
SU fell behind early as DU made use of a two-out walk followed by an RBI double in the bottom of the first to put the score at 1-0 in the Tigers favor. The Pirates had an answer, however, as Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) led off the second inning with a triple to left center field. He then scored on a Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) sacrifice fly to tie the game. The next batter, Brad Culling (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius HS) drove a triple to dead-center and scored on the ensuing single by Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) to give SU a 2-1 lead.
DePauw would then tie the game in the fourth inning on a Drew Holy solo home run to right. The Pirates would score the final run of the game in the sixth inning as Herrmann and Culling led off the frame with back-to-back singles. With men on first and third, Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Herrmann and put SU ahead for good, 3-2.
Morrison went the distance for SU for his eighth complete game of the season. He improved to 8-4 overall while striking out six and walking three. The senior allowed just two earned runs on eight hits. Only two of the eight hits allowed were extra-base hits.
Culling went 3-4 in the game with one run scored while Gonzales had two hits in three at-bats. Gonzales drove in two runs for the Bucs.
Southwestern's record now stands at 18-22 for the year while DePauw falls to 23-15.
The two teams meet again on Saturday (Apr. 21) in Millington at 5:00 p.m. for the second game of the SCAC Divisional Playoff series with the Pirates one win away from qualifying for the SCAC Championship Tournament being played on the campus of Southwestern in Georgetown, TX.
