Pirates Drop Regular Season Finale to Trinity, 10-7

The SU baseball team saw a 6-1 lead disappear in its regular season finale against the Trinity University Tigers on Sunday (Apr. 15) in Georgetown, TX as the Pirates fell 10-7.

Trinity's starting pitcher walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the first and then yielded a two-run single through the left side to Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS). Two batters later, Derek Berger (Houston, TX/Spring Woods HS) singled to left center to score Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) and put SU ahead 3-0. Trinity made a pitching change and senior Matt Glenn (Dallas, TX/Wilson HS) drove a single through left side to score another run and stake the Pirates to a 4-0 lead.

TU answered with a run in the top of the second with the help of a pair of wild pitches and a couple of hits. The Pirates got two more runs in the second when Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) drove his second home run of the season over the right field fence. The Tigers got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, both on wild pitches with two outs. With the score at 6-3 in SU's favor, Trinity scored another run on a wild pitch and one off a sacrifice fly to put within one.

The Bucs allowed four runs thanks to a pair of two-run singles in the seventh to fall behind 9-6 through seven innings. Trinity added one more in the eighth to make the lead 10-6. Southwestern scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth on a double play ball for a final of 10-7.

Herrmann and Berger both went 2-5 in the game and together drove in three of the Pirates' runs. Bellomy scored twice, walked twice and drove in two runs while collecting one hit in three at bats. Junior Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) also scored two times for SU.

The loss fell on sophomore Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) as he allowed four earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched in relief. He only allowed two hits but he also walked two, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. He is now 2-4. Starter Travis Sartain (Houston, TX/Klein HS) threw five wild pitches in five innings of work.

The Pirates close out the regular season with a record of 17-22 and a 9-7 mark in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Trinity finishes 7-8 in the SCAC and 17-20 overall.

Southwestern will next play a three-game series against DePauw University in the SCAC Divisional Playoff as the third seed from the West Division of the SCAC. All games will be played in Millington, TN with the first game scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday (Apr. 20) and the second game set for 5:00 p.m. on Saturday (Apr. 21). If needed, the two teams will play a third game on Sunday (Apr. 22) with the time to be decided.
