Southwestern Splits SCAC Doubleheader with Rival Trinity

The Southwestern University baseball team won one and lost one on Saturday (Apr. 14) afternoon in Georgetown, TX as the Pirates faced the Trinity University Tigers in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Southwestern 7, Trinity 2

In the opener, the Bucs scored two on a two-out double to right center from Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS). They added another run in the bottom of the third when sophomore Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) lined a single to right to score Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) from third base.

In the fourth inning, SU took advantage of four Tiger errors to add four runs on one hit. Through four, the Pirates held a commanding 7-0 lead. Trinity managed to score its first run of the series in the sixth inning off SU starter Scott Rogers (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus HS) and then got one more in the seventh for the final score of 7-2.

Bellomy was had two hits in two at-bats and scored three runs. Herrmann was a perfect 1-1, collecting three runs batted in. Rogers lasted 6.2 innings to earn the win, running his season record to 2-6. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking three.

Trinity 8, Southwestern 3

TU struck first in the second game, putting a three-spot on the Pirates in the top of the first inning. The Pirates allowed another two runs in the second inning as they committed their second error in as many innings. Down 5-0, SU came alive in the bottom of the second. Herrmann led off with a triple to right followed by an RBI triple to left by Brad Culling (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius HS). The next batter, Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) doubled down the right field line to score Culling and pull SU to within three.

Trinity scored an unearned run in the fifth inning on a throwing error to extend its lead to 6-2. The Pirates answered right back with a run as Bellomy hit a ground ball to second to score Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) from third. SU remained down three until the ninth when the Tigers scored two more runs on two hits, making the score 8-3.

Sophomore Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) and Herrmann were the only two Bucs with multiple hits as they were each 2-5. Murphy had one run batted in and Herrmann scored once.

Sophomore Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) started for Southwestern and allowed 10 hits in eight innings. TU scored all eight runs, five of them earned, off Willis. He struck out three and walked four batters.

The Pirates now own a 17-21 record, 9-6 in the SCAC. Trinity moves to 16-20, 6-8 in the conference.

The two teams meet in the Pirates' final regular season game on Sunday (Apr. 15) at 2:00 p.m. in Georgetown.
