Box Score

The SU Pirates baseball team picked up a 7-0 win on Friday (Apr. 13) in the opening game of a four-game series with Trinity University, backed by two home runs by sophomore Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) and a complete game from starter Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS) in Georgetown, TX.

Southwestern's offense got started early as first-year John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) drew a leadoff walk and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt before Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) singled to shortstop. With one out and two men on, Murphy drove a ball over the fence in left centerfield to give SU a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, first-year Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS) dropped down a bunt single on a suicide squeeze play to drive in Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) from third. In the following inning, Murphy struck again with his second home run to left field, plating two more runs and giving the Pirates a commanding 6-0 lead. In the eighth, Wooten hit a deep drive well over the right field fence for the seventh run of the game for SU.

Morrison went the distance, not allowing a single run and scattering six hits over nine innings. He struck out six and walked five while giving up just one extra-base hit. The Tigers did not advance a single runner past second base. Morrison improved his record to 7-4 on the season.

Murphy was 2-5 in the game with the two home runs, driving in five runs and scoring two. He now has four homers on the year. Wooten's home run was his third this season as he had a 2-3 day, scoring twice and driving in one.

Bellomy scored two runs, collecting two hits in three at-bats. Clark had the Pirates other RBI with two bunt singles in the game.

The Pirates have now won seven of their last nine games and own a 16-20 overall record, 8-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Trinity falls to 5-7 in the conference and 15-19 overall.

The two teams will played a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 14) in Georgetown with the first game starting at 2:00 p.m.
