Pirates Hang on for Conference Victory over Hendrix College

The SU baseball team improved its record to above .500 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play for the first time this season with a 6-4 win over the Hendrix College Warriors in Conway, AR.

Southwestern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) drove in John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) from third base with a ground ball to shortstop. The Pirates enjoyed a big inning in the fifth as they got four runs on three hits, one error, two walks, three passed balls and one wild pitch. Wooten led the inning off with a double while Bellomy and Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) both recorded singles. SU ended the inning with a 5-0 lead.

The Warriors got on the board in the seventh with a single run on a pair of hits. They then pulled closer in the eighth with another run off starter Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS), making the score 5-2. SU added another run in the ninth as first-year Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS) singled to right field to drive in Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) from third.

In the bottom of the ninth, Morrison gave up two singles and hit a batter to open the inning. Eric Ruff (Bacliff, TX/Clear Creek HS) came in and struck out the one batter he faced and was followed by junior Scott Rogers (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus HS). Rogers allowed a sacrifice fly and an infield singles before striking out the final batter of the game with SU ahead 6-4.

Herrmann had three hits in four at-bats for the Bucs, scoring one run and also drawing a walk. Wooten, Bellomy and Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) all had two hits for the Pirates. Bellomy was credited with two runs batted in and one run scored while Wooten scored twice.

Morrison went eight innings, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits while striking out four and walking three. He also had one hit batter. The senior's season record now stands and 5-4.

The Pirates are now 13-19 on the season, 5-4 against SCAC competition, and tied for second place in the SCAC West Division. Hendrix falls to 12-18-1, 1-7 in conference.

The Pirates and Warriors meet again on Friday (Apr. 6) at 2:00 p.m. in Conway.
