Box Score

The SU baseball team allowed 14 runs on 11 hits in the final game of a four-game series with the 13th-ranked Millsaps College Majors on Sunday (Mar. 25), losing the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest 14-4 in Georgetown, TX.

Things went south quickly for the Pirates as they allowed seven runs in the top of the second inning. The Pirates committed an error early in the inning and all seven runs were unearned as Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) walked three and gave up four hits in the inning. Millsaps got two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 10-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the sixth, the Pirates first two hitters walked before senior Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) singled to right centerfield. The next batter, Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) drove an 0-1 pitch over the fence to left field to score three runs. Millsaps put together four hits in the next inning to put the lead back at 10, 14-4. SU failed to push across a run in the seventh, ending the game due to a 10-run rule.

Murphy's home run was his sole hit of the game and was his second home run of the season. The sophomore also extended his current hitting streak to 11 games, the longest of the year for the Pirates. Bellomy is currently riding an eight game hitting streak thanks to his RBI single.

Gonzales was saddled with the loss, giving up seven unearned runs in 1.2 innings. He walked five and gave up three hits. His season record is now 2-3.

The Pirates' record now stands at 9-18, 1-3 in the SCAC. Millsaps improves to 19-6, 5-3 in the conference.

Southwestern's next game will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (Mar. 30) in Sherman, TX as the Pirates begin a four-game series with SCAC foe Austin College.
