Box Score

The Southwestern University baseball team opened its conference season with a 4-3 loss to the #13 Millsaps College Majors in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Mar. 23) afternoon..

The Pirates got to Millsaps starter Travis Bogue in the first frame as Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) drew a two-out walk. Sophomore Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) then drove a 1-0 pitch to the left centerfield gap to score Bellomy and give SU a 1-0 lead. Millsaps got a singe run in the top of the second thanks to a pair of hits off Pirates' starting pitcher Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS).

The Majors touched Morrison for four hits and a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. They then scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth for a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Southwestern closed the gap. First-year Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS) scored SU's second run on a wild pitch and then Bellomy drove in a run with a single through the left side to make the score 4-3.

Murphy was the only Pirate to have a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with one double. He also had one run batted in. Bellomy went 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

Morrison was the hard-luck loser for Southwestern as he threw his fifth complete game of the season. In nine innings of work, he scattered 11 hits and allowed four runs with just three of them being earned. The senior right-hander struck out two and walked one.

The Pirates' season record falls to 8-16, 0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the Majors improve to 17-5, 3-2.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 24) in Georgetown beginning at 1:00 p.m.
