In its final non-conference game of the season, the Southwestern University baseball team totaled double-digits in runs for just the third time this season but lost 14-11 to the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys on Wednesday (Mar. 21) in Georgetown, TX.

The Cowboys grabbed the lead in the third with a single unearned run off Pirate reliever Travis Sartain (Houston, TX/Klein HS). The Pirates then exploded in the bottom half of the third for five runs. Junior Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) stroked his second home run of the season with one out to give SU a 2-1 lead. With two outs and one man on, Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) doubled to left center to drive in a run. Senior Brad Culling (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius HS) followed with a double to dead center to score Murphy. The next batter, Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS), singled in Culling to make the score 5-1.

The Cowboys bounced back in the fourth with six runs of their own thanks to six base hits and one walk. HSU then added to its lead in the sixth with a single run to make the score 8-5. In the seventh inning, Hardin-Simmons put four more runs on the board for a 12-5 lead.

Southwestern's bats returned to life in the seventh inning as the Pirates cut the HSU lead to one with six runs. The inning included a John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) two-run triple, an RBI double from Murphy and four singles. Southwestern could not get any closer as the Pirates allowed a single run in the final two frames for a final score of 14-11.

Falcone led the Pirates with three hits in four at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring twice. He also drew a walk and he now leads the team with two home runs. Murphy collected a pair of doubles in the game, scoring twice and recording two RBI.

Bellomy scored two runs for SU while going 2-4 at the plate with one double. Wooten's triple was his second of the season as he had two runs batted in and one run scored.

First-year Brandon Williams (Texas City, HS/Texas City HS) took the loss for the Pirates, allowing three earned runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning. His season record is now 0-1.

The Pirates' record drops to 8-15 as they head in to their first conference series against #16 Millsaps College at home. The teams will play four games in three days from Friday-Sunday (Mar. 23-25) with Friday's game starting at 3:00 p.m.
