The SU baseball team picked up a much needed win on Tuesday (Mar. 20) evening over the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves in Georgetown, TX by a score of 9-1.

Cardinal Stritch took a short lead in the top of the third inning with a single earned run off Pirate reliever Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS). In the bottom half of the inning, with John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) and Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) on base, senior Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) stroked a two-out double to the right centerfield gap to give SU a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) drew a walk with one out and then stole second and third before being driven in on a ground ball by Falcone. The Pirates extended their lead to 5-1 in the sixth with an RBI from Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) and a run on throwing error. Southwestern scored a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a final lead of 9-1.

Bellomy enjoyed a fantastic game, going 3-3 with four runs batted in, one run scored, three stolen bases, one walk and one sacrifice fly. Two of his three base hits were doubles. Sophomore catcher Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) collected a pair of hits, one of which was a double, while scoring once and driving in one.

Falcone scored two runs, as did Boone, and had two RBI while going 1-3 at the plate. Boone stole two bases while Wooten stole one and Murphy also had a steal in the game.

Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) pitched four scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win and improve his overall record to 2-2. He allowed just two hits, striking out four and walking just one.

The Pirates' record moves to 8-14 on the year while the Wolves fall to a lowly 1-11.

Southwestern will host Hardin-Simmons University for the final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday (Mar. 21) in Georgetown at 3:00 p.m.
