SU Suffers 11-2 Defeat at the Hands of the Crusaders

Southwestern pitching allowed 13 hits and the offense could only manage seven singles in an 11-2 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday (Mar. 7) evening in Georgetown, TX.

The Pirates struck first with a run in the third inning and held a short-lived 1-0 lead. Junior Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) led off with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a fielder's choice and then scored on another passed ball.

UMHB exploded in the top of the fifth inning for seven runs on eight hits off starting pitcher Scott Rogers (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus HS) and reliever Brad Mathis (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS). The Crusaders added four runs in the top of the ninth on two hits and one Southwestern error for an 11-1 lead. The Pirates then scored once in the ninth on a single from first-year Landon Durham (Pearland, TX/Pearland HS) that drove in Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) from third.

Sophomore Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) was the sole Buc to record multiple hits, going 2-4 at the plate with a pair of singles. Falcone was 1-2 with a run scored and a walk while Durham had the only RBI in his one at bat. Senior Derek Berger (Houston, TX/Spring Woods HS) walked four times.

Rogers suffered the loss for the Pirates with his season record falling 1-3. He lasted 4.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.

Southwestern's record drops to 7-11 for the year and the Crusaders improved to 6-9-1.

The Pirates travel to Abilene, TX for the McMurry/Hardin-Simmons Classic from March 12-14 with games against Hardin-Simmons University, Wayland Baptist University, McMurry University and Marietta College.
