Southwestern's Road Struggles Continue in Fort Worth

The Southwestern baseball team traveled to Fort Worth, TX on Saturday (Mar. 4) for a doubleheader with Texas Wesleyan University, dropping both games by scores of 5-4 and 10-1.

The Pirates opened the game with a leadoff walk for Landon Durham (Pearland, TX/Pearland HS) who then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) followed with a single and then Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) doubled down the left field line to give SU a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Bucs added three runs on five straight hits. Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS), Durham and Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) all drove in one run. TWU did not get its first hit until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Rams exploded for five runs on five hits and one error. The Pirates then failed to get a hit in the final three innings.

Senior Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS) went the distance for SU, throwing six innings and allowing four earned runs. He gave up six hits while striking out three and walking five. His season record drops to 3-2 with the loss.

Falcone, a junior, went 2-3 with one run batted in. Herrmann also had a pair of hits in four at bats and drove in one. Durham scored twice for the Pirates and had one RBI with one hit.

In game two, the Rams jumped ahead with a big second inning in which they scored seven runs on four hits, three walks, one error and one passed ball. The Pirates answered with a run in the top of the third. Sophomore Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) led off with a double down the right field line and then moved to third on a passed ball. First-year Trey Bearden (Plano, TX/Plano HS) hit a ground ball to shortstop to bring Noggle home and make the score 7-1.

Texas Wesleyan got its final three runs in the fourth inning on three hits that included a two-run home run off Pirate reliever Kyle Foreman (Georgetown, TX/Northwest HS). The Rams held SU to just four hits in the game, three of which were singles.

Sophomore Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) suffered the loss for the Pirates, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. His record moves to 0-3 on the year. SU used seven different pitchers in the game.

With the two losses, the Pirates are now 6-10 for the season and just 2-6 on the road. Texas Wesleyan, meanwhile, improved to 11-2 with the two wins.

The Pirates return home for a game with Howard Payne University at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Mar. 6) in Georgetown, TX.
