Box Score

Runs were hard to come by as the Southwestern University baseball team lost a pair of two-run ballgames against a tough University of Texas-Dallas squad in Richardson, TX on Tuesday (Feb. 27) afternoon.

Texas-Dallas 2, Southwestern 0

The first game was a pitcher's duel between SU starter Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS) and UTD starter Andrew Hastings. The Pirates threatened in the top of the first after back-to-back hits by junior Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) and senior Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) put runners on second and third with one out. The next two batters struck out and grounded out to end the inning.

The first run of the game came in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Brett Rosen singled up the middle to score Reagan from second base and put the Comets ahead 1-0. UTD then got an insurance run in the sixth on a two-out throwing error by Falcone for a 2-0 lead.

Neither team collected an extra-base hit in the game with nine singles total. Morrison allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings while giving up just five singles and striking out two. He also issued two walks and hit one batter. His season record falls to 3-1 on the year.

Texas-Dallas 3, Southwestern 1

The Comets scored in the first inning of the second game thanks to three singles and a Pirate fielding error. SU got its first and only run of the day when Falcone singled to left with two outs followed by a Bellomy double down the left field line to tie the score at 1-1.

UTD broke the tie in the bottom half of the sixth with three-straight singles to open the inning. With the score at 2-1, a wild pitch from Pirate starter Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) put a man in scoring position and he scored two batters later with two out in the inning.

Bellomy and the Comets Matt Kelly both had doubles in the game, the only two extra-base hits of the day. Willis scattered 12 hits over six innings and struck out two. He gave up two earned runs, three total, and did not walk any hitters. He is now 0-2 for the year.

As a team, Southwestern's record falls to 5-8 on the year while the Comets improved to 6-3.

The Pirates continue their current road swing on Thursday (Mar. 1) when they play Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, TX at 2:00 p.m.
