Thomas Hunter joined the Southwestern track and field staff for the 2021 season as an assistant coach overseeing the program's sprinters. 

Hunter is a United States Military veteran, serving from 2011-2019 as a staff sergeant. Hunter devised strength and conditioning programs for soldiers and assisted military personnel in personal and professional counseling and instructions on requirements for educational purposes in the military. 

From 2018-2019, Hunter was a personal trainer at the Burn Boto Camp, where he implemented nutrition philosophies for clients and led weekly camps and training sessions. Hunter has previous coaching experience, serving as an assistant for Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas, where he devised workout plans for athletes to develop proper form and technique in multiple events, in addition to conditioning programs, injury prevention, and technical skills development. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 2009-2010, and a volunteer assistant at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, from 2005-2006. 

Hunter was a Nike-sponsored professional track and field athlete from 2007-2011, competing throughout the United States and internationally. He was a 2009 Top 30 in the World in the 200m, 2009 USATF Qualifier in the 100m and 200m, and 2007 Division III All-American in the 55m and 400m. 

He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Science Kinesiology from the University of La Verne in 2018 and is expected to earn his Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland in 2023.
