Southwestern Sets New School Record On Day 1 of SCAC Championships

SAN ANTONIO — Southwestern men's track & field opened the first day of the SCAC Championships with a pair of third-place finishes, including a new school record, to sit in fourth place with one day of competition remaining. 

The Pirates' quartet of Yadon Tramel, Andrae Gibson, Adrian Washington, and Jamal Maxey placed third in the 4x100 relay, crossing the finish line with a time of 42.32, breaking the school record of 42.65 set in 2008. Trinity (41.18) and Texas Lutheran (41.34) finished in the top two spots. 

Noah Dennis also produced an all-conference performance, placing third in the 10,000-meter run with a season-best time of 34:23.19 to trail only Colorado College's Devlin Swanson (32:22.55) and Ben Gellman (34:18.95) in a thrilling race. C.P. Shaulis placed ninth with a time of 35:36.47. 

Maxey paced the Pirates in the 200-meter dash with a seventh-place finish, clocking in at a season-best  22.19. Gibson placed 11th (22.46), and Yadon Tramel 15th (22.57).

Brian Armijo finished 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.49, with Nathan Botros in 19th (2:07.60) and Vincent Kim in 21st (2:12.32). Ethan Marquez earned a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time (58.57), and Keith Rupe clocked in at 1:03.24 to finish 10th. 

Maxey recorded a personal-best distance of 6.87 meters to place fifth in the long jump and teammate Christopher Ojonta placed 10th with a mark of 6.33 meters. 

Arturo Jimenez finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 13.54 meters. Sam Dawson (10.66 meters) placed 12th. Grey Wagner competed in the hammer throw, placing 10th with a distance of 25.62 meters. 

Competition resumes tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with the 5,000-meter finals, followed by the discus, high jump, triple jump, and javelin.
